In occasione del rilascio su Appstore della nuova versione di Pcam per Iphone abbiamo fatto qualche domanda a David Eubank, creatore dil programma più diffuso tra i filmmakers di tutto il mondo...

AITR: In a few words, what is PCAM and who can/should use it?

David: pCAM is a a graphical cinematography calculator for motion picture Directors of Photography, Camera Operators, Camera Assistants, VFX Supervisors, Script Supervisors, Gaffers, Grips, Editors, Production Designers, Art Directors and film Students.

AITR: For those who already know PCAM, can you tell us something about the new features in this version?

David: The iPhone version combines both pCAM and pCINE making it more streamlined and easier to use. It has larger screens and icons making the entries and calculations easier to see than the Palm version. It also has more current Camera Formats like HD and Depth of Field makes use of gestural changes to Distance and Aperture.

AITR:
Why did you choose to write a version of PCAM for the iPhone, and not for Windows Mobile, which has a larger user base?

David: It's takes so much time, money and energy to develop an application and since there was a Palm emulator called StyleTap which allowed the Palm version to work on Windows Mobile, I decided not to port it over.

AITR: Are you thinking about developing a version of PCAM for other platforms?

David:
I've thought about the Blackberry and the Android, but presently I need to focus on the iPhone version making it better and better.

AITR: Does PCAM run also on the iPod?

David: Yes, pCAM for iPhone also works on the iPod touch.

AITR:
In the beginning, what motivated you to make a substantial effort in both time and money, to develop PCAM?

David:
I developed the Palm version for myself to use in my work and had no idea others would be interested in it. When I discovered others were interested I kept adding to it and then created pCINE to go along with it. At the time memory in the Palm was limited and I couldn't fit both into the same interface.

I felt that the Palm version was antiquated and needed a new look and at the same time I also realized that iPhone Apps were going to be very popular. I started interviewing programmers in January 2008, seven months before Apple opened the App Store and introduced its new operating system. I picked the iPhone over the Blackberry, Android and Windows Mobile because I knew it would be a more popular device for filmmakers.
